Online therapy, or telemental health, offers a rapidly-growing alternative to being seen in the traditional office setting. This is also called online therapy or video counseling. With telemental health, services are provided remotely through video teleconferencing. This can be a primary method of therapy or used along with face-to-face sessions. Telemental health has several benefits:
- It offers access to care to those who might not otherwise have it, such as those in rural areas or who may be limited in their mobility.
- It eliminates travel time to and from the appointment, which also helps to save money.
- For many, it may be more comfortable accessing care from the security of their own home or location other than the therapist’s office.
- You are less limited by geographical location when choosing a therapist.
Are you a good candidate for online therapy? That depends on factors such as your location and the presenting issues. As a licensed Marriage and Family Therapist in the state of Texas, I can only work with Texas residents. Not all presenting problems are appropriate for telemental health. After reviewing the initial paperwork and conducting an initial assessment via video teleconference, I will be able to make some treatment recommendations. Those recommendations might include videoconference sessions exclusively or in conjunction with face-to-face therapy. It could involve a referral to another provider. If a referral is necessary, I will work with you to find alternative treatment options based on your needs.
Telemental health can be utilized for marital therapy as well as individual therapy. I do not use telemental health services for clients under 18. In addition, I do not conduct group therapy sessions at this time in my practice.
The cost of for an online session is the same as a face-to-face session. Some insurance plans do cover telemental health as part of your mental health coverage. It is a good idea to contact your insurance company to find out if this form of therapy is covered by your specific plan. Payment is made prior to the session through PayPal, which you can access on my website.
Connection online is done through VSee. This technology conforms to the rigorous HIPAA standards of security, unlike Skype or other videoconferencing applications. It is a free application, highly secure, and easy to download and use. You can visit their website https://vsee.com/ for more information.
